Mayflies come in many different sizes and colors. For most of their lives, they live underwater as nymphs (larvae), where they remain, feeding on aquatic material until they go up to the surface, shed their skin, and reveal their adult winged bodies (they are known as emergers during this time), and then they take flight (as adults, or duns), molt again, mate, lay eggs on the water (as spinners), and die. Their adult lives are very short, probably only one day, but in all of their forms trout love them.
